A folded hiking map
Scale and Contour Lines
Unfold the map and you are holding a flat sheet; under your boots lies ground that is neither flat nor two-dimensional. The sheet has to do three jobs at once: shrink the world, flatten a curved surface, and hand back the third dimension it lost while flattening. None of the three is free, and what it costs is not the cartographer's choice.
