The ferry has to dock at the pier straight across, and the water beneath it never stops for a second. If the captain points the bow at the pier, the ferry still ends up downstream of it. So the bow is turned upstream instead, toward a point nobody is heading for. The direction chosen and the path travelled are two different things — and neither is free: one of them forces the other.
